HOW'D THEY GET THAT NAME?

Hello, there! This is Nicky and I finally get my chance to have a little input into this site that my brother, Koko, has tried to monopolize. I'm here to fill you in on how some famous Meezers (and a couple of other four-legged fur persons who should be meezers!) got their well-known names. Since this is my show, let's start with me!

Mom tells me I was named after one of the characters in the movie Bell, Book & Candle, which is very much beloved around our household. Although the "Nicky" in that movie wasn't a Meezer (or any type of furry beast for that matter) he was definitely one "cool cat." Played by the wonderful and talented actor Jack Lemmon, he was a male witch with a lot of pizzazz. Mom is especially fond of one line in the movie: "Oh, Nicky, will you never grow up?" Guess she thinks that applies to me and Brother as well!

Speaking of Brother, you probably have surmised that he received his name as a result of Mom reading the Cat Who mystery series by beloved writer Lilian Jackson Braun. If you are unfamiliar with the characters (just where have you been?), there are two Meezers in it named Koko and Yum-Yum. Mom thought "Koko" was a cool name and our fate was cast when she had a dream one night in which she and Pop adopted three Meezers, named "Koko," "Nicky," and "Zoe" (alas, we were not so fortunate as to come equiped with a Sister, however, since Koko and I comprised the entire litter!)

Getting back to other famous-named Meezers, let's revisit the aforementioned Bell, Book & Candle before moving on. One of our predecessor Meezers was named "Pyewackett," which is indeed the Meezer's name in the movie! Actually, the name goes way, way back in American history, and is a well-known name for witches' familiars (those who do the witches' bidding, although I am firmly of the opinion that it was the other way around!) Although our Pyewackett was not a Monkeygirl (having being born in the Chinese Year of the Ox, of all things), she was a Meezer of the highest caliber, and was famous for her extended and detailed "ceiling gazing" (see our Friends page for more detail on Pye).

Our other predecessor was Aisha. Aisha was named because when Pop was going to college many, many moons ago and was taking a class on mideastern history, he read about the favorite wife of Mohammad, who was named "Aisha," and thought it was tres chic. Although I never met her, I understand our Aisha was quite the grande dame herself, and a holy terror in her own right! (More about her on the Friends page as well.) Unfortunately for her, she was not a Monkeygirl either, having also had the misfortune to be born in the Year of the Ox.

I mentioned the Cat Who books previously, so let's now return to that. The two heroes of that series, K'ao Ko Kung ("Koko") and Yum Yum, were named by their fur-less person after the main characters in the Gilbert and Sullivan musical, Mikado. Now, while I have never seen this musical, I remain of the opinion that the literary Koko and Yum Yum were probably much better singers than their two-footed namesakes and probably would have made the whole extravaganza a more delightful entertainment!

Let's talk now of the Meezer ninjas in the musical Cats. While the script for this play states that the ninjas are Abyssinians, of all things, I am of the firm opinion that they are indeed Meezers! Come on now! What else could they be? They look like Meezers, and who else would have the ability to wield a weapon like that (natural shivs aside)?

There were also ninjas in the movie Cats & Dogs. Again, the two-legged creatures responsible for this movie refused to admit that the ninjas were or should have been Meezers! They state they are Russian Blues! What Russian Blues know about being ninjas is probably nil. Why do you suppose they do not give credit where credit is due? Blues are not Asian and do not possess the refined (and sneaky) skills necessary to carry out such a feat!

While we're on a literary bent, let's talk about Mom's favorite detective, Midnight Louie, from the alphabetic mystery series written by the lovely and talented Miss Carole Nelson Douglas. True, this feline is not a meezer, but he certainly has the instincts and talents of one (must be an Asian somewhere in that lineage)! Aside from his very engaging and titillating name, this dude certainly has a lot of moxie, and is extremely entertaining to boot! Mom dreads the day the alphabet is finished and the series comes to an end (it is currently on "M"). If you haven't read this series, be sure to check it out, and also be sure to visit Miss Douglas's web site, for information on the cat adoption program she and Midnight Louie endorse.

A couple of other wise guys who everyone has heard of are "Si" and "Am" from the Disney classic, Lady and the Tramp. Mom says these guys remind her of Brother and me, though I can't imagine why! Isn't feline curiosity a natural thing?

Many years before Brother and I were born, there was another famous Meezer who was the star of a few movies: That Darn Cat, more familiarly called "D.C." Now what a rogue he was! Brother and I are attempting to get copies of his movies so that we can hone his skills. Unfortunately for us, we do not have access to the wide outdoors, but rest assured we can certainly cause enough mischief indoors! D.C. would be proud!

Well, that's all the famous dudes and dude-ettes (to paraphrase Midnight Louie) that I can think of for now. I'll try to think of more, and if you think of any that should be included, please write me and let me know! So long for now,

Nicky
